Project: Landscape analysis of the main areas of occurrence of the black lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysopygus)

Abstract: The Black Lion Tamarin (BLT, Leontopithecus chrysopygus) is an endangered species, endemic of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The BLT is a small-bodied species and occurred in low density, which makes the detection and study of this species difficult. Currently, it has been sighted in about 13 municipalities. For its conservation, it is important to know better its habitat and the landscape characteristics of its areas of occurrence to evaluate its needs and correlate these data to the behavior and ecology of the species. Therefore, this project seeks to identify patterns in the main areas of occurrence of BLT in the municipalities of Angatuba, Borebi, Buri, Euclides da Cunha Paulista, Gália, Guareí, Itapeva, Paulista, Pilar do Sul, Presidente Prudente, São Miguel Arcanjo, Taquarivaí, and Teodoro Sampaio. We will characterize those municipalities, focusing on the surrounding areas of the BLT sighting, through the analysis of relief, elevation, climate, humidity, vegetation, and agricultural matrix. In addition, we aim to determine landscape characteristics such as percentage of forest cover, connectivity, distance to the nearest continuous forest, and mean isolation. The data will be georeferenced through Geographic Information System tools, combining the GoogleEarth from Google and ArcGIS software from ESRI.
