Project: Seed dispersal by primates and implications for the conservation of a biodiversity hotspot

Abstract: Seed dispersal is a critical factor on plants biological cycle, allowing plant recruitment in conditions where they are subjected to less predation and less competition for nutrients. Primates are pointed as the most important seed dispersers on tropical forests due to their large body mass and big daily range, being the extinction of such animals in response to illegal hunting and habitat loss pointed as one of the principal threats to biodiversity management in these communities. The study carried out consists on a systematic review of seed dispersal by primates in a biodiversity hotspot, the Atlantic Forest of South America, aiming to stress each ecospecies’ role on seed dispersal, as well as to draw a picture of available data and what is still lacking.
